Xiaomi is the market leader in India when it comes to smartphones, especially because of its blockbuster Redmi series.
However, the company has slowly started seeping into ecosystem products, with its Mi TV lineup that has seen tremendous success over the past 12 months. In an attempt to continue its run in the home appliances market, Xiaomi is reportedly planning to unveil products in more categories this year.
A report by LiveMint quotes Xiaomi India head Manu Kumar Jain to claim that the Chinese electronics giant "will probably enter big categories such as water purifiers, laptops, and washing machines. Additional launches will include two to three small categories as well".
The report suggests that India's consumer durables market is pegged at about 1 trillion rupees, and Xiaomi wants a big slice of that pie. However, getting into this business is extremely tough from a commercial point of view.
For instance, selling a smartphone doesn't require formulating a lot of SKUs, dependent on market research. However, selling appliances like TVs and fridges requires a lot of research into what is selling and then matching pricing for it.
Additionally, there is the case of after-sales services. While phones do require a minimum level of it, the one related with home appliances is a different ball game. Managing service complaints for these devices require specialised professionals, of which there is a clear dearth in India.
We shall have to wait and see as to which products Xiaomi brings to the Indian market and when.
