7 killer features of Apple's new iPhones

by Siddhant Dahiya

It’s funny how months of leaks exposed almost all details about Apple’s 2018 iPhone line-up… and yet the company still managed to blow people away during today’s unveiling. Yes, there are three iPhone models this year, the premium 6.5-inch iPhone XS Max, the 5.8-inch iPhone XS and a cheaper 6.1-inch iPhone XR. While the first two sport an OLED display, the iPhone XR houses an LCD panel. And yes, they come with the class-leading A12 processor, better displays and camera systems than ever before and some new features. But we already knew all this, right? And yet Apple has made the unveiling feel just as impressive as it would have been if everything announced was a surprise. Let’s dig into the seven best features of the newly-announced iPhone models.

A12 Bionic Chip

Apple’s latest chip powering the new iPhone lineup is ‘the smartest and most powerful chip ever in a smartphone’ according to the company. It features a six-core CPU, four-core GPU (50 percent faster than A11), and an updated version of the Neural Engine, designed to handle advanced AI tasks. A 7-nanometer chip, the A12 has an eight-core Neural Engine capable of handling a mind-boggling 5 trillion operations per second.

Improved Dual Camera

Both the iPhone Xs and Xs Max feature a 12MP dual-camera setup (one wide-angle and one telephoto), with optical image stabilisation and 2x optical zoom. The wide angle camera now uses a new sensor with larger pixels, and the telephone includes a wider aperture, enabling much better performance in low light. There’s also a new Depth Control feature that lets you dynamically adjust the depth of field of a picture in both in real-time and after-capture through the Photos app.

Dual SIM capabilities

This is the first time Apple has introduced dual-SIM capabilities for an iPhone. All three models this year will support the use of two phone numbers and data plans, using a single physical SIM card and Apple’s integrated e-SIM. Support for this will be added via a software update later this fall.  However, in China, where e-SIMs aren’t allowed for some reason, Apple will launch a special version of the smartphone featuring two physical SIM card trays.

Better battery life

Although Apple didn’t reveal the exact battery capacity of its latest iPhones, it did go on to say that the iPhone XS is capable of lasting 30 minutes longer than iPhone X, while the iPhone XS Max offers an hour and a half bump over the previous iteration.

Faster Face ID

Face ID, Apple’s famous facial authentication system has now been made even faster. The TrueDepth camera system now uses precision depth-sensing technology to enable a faster and more secure access to your iPhone and apps like Apple Pay. Even Depth Control is available on the TrueDepth camera for selfies, including Memoji and faster face tracking support for third-party ARKit apps.

Super Retina display

The 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch custom OLED panels on the iPhone XS and XS Max respectively, support Dolby Vision and HDR10 and have iOS system-wide colour management for enhanced colour accuracy. They are said to have the highest pixel density of any Apple device. Both displays offer a million-to-one contrast ratio with remarkable brightness and true blacks while showing 60 percent greater dynamic range in HDR photos.

New Colour Options

The premium iPhone XS and XS Max will be available in three colours, namely silver, space grey and an all-new gold variant. On the other hand, the cheaper iPhone XR will be available in as many as six finishes, including white, black, blue, yellow, coral and (PRODUCT)RED.
