Latest Questions about Xiaomi Mobiles

Why am I not immediately notified when calls come from unknown numbers on my Xiaomi phone?

This is one of the very useful and handy feature that Xiaomi has integrated in MIUI and not a bug, however, if you do not want it there it can be turned off. When the feature is turned on, the handset will automatically mute the first call from any unknown number, which is pretty handy for those who want to ignore such calls. However, some calls from unknown numbers can also be urgent and cannot be missed. So, disable the feature, follow the given steps:

Go to the Contacts

Tap on the menu button (3 dots button)

Tap on Settings > Call settings > Incoming Call Settings

Toggle off Mute unknown numbers

How does Xiaomi manages to keep the price so low? I am really skeptical about Xiaomi mobiles.

The main highlight of Xiaomi mobiles is the price tag that it launches the handsets with and it is natural to be skeptical about the quality and life of the handsets. However, the brand has managed to keep the price low by selling through its own websites and ecommerce sites. This direct selling to consumers removes the need for a retail channel and thus saves a lot on the margin. Further, the brand does not adhere to any conventional means of marketing like launch events and advertisements. Xiaomi usually depends on Facebook and Chinese social media to promote and market its products. Moreover, the CEO of brand has also confirmed that the brand only adds a very marginal profit over the cost of production to keep price in control. So, while the brand is cutting costs in lot of ways, the quality of its handsets are the least of worries. Moreover, Xiaomi has longer average selling time per mobile compared to competitors in this price segment. Means, even while new models are released, the demand of older models is still there and the brand is able to keep making profits in the long run. Xiaomi offers multiple price cuts during the life cycle of the product and hence able to attract buyers. As their portfolio is not that big, they are able to focus more on quality without compromising on features.

What is MIUI and how is it better than the Stock Android OS?

Android is basically a platform. Xiaomi uses this platform to design its own custom skin called MIUI, which is shipped with all of its smartphones. Xiaomi has added tons of additional features in addition to the what Android has to offer as MIUI is open source and best of other brands can easily be incorporated. The Phone, Calendar, Messaging and Mail apps in Stock Android have been replaced with MIUI's own, which bring even more functionality to them. Not only this, MIUI also gives fine control over security and customisation to its users, which is not possible in Stock Android. Also, Xiaomi updates MIUI every week so that it is always up to date with bug fixes and improvements. Stock Android on the other hand doesn't allow extreme customization as far as themes and skins are concerned for security reasons and more stability.

What are the major disadvantages of Xiaomi smartphones?

Xiaomi offers incredible value for money for all its devices. However, there are a few issues reported by users but are of little concern and should not deter you from buying a Xiaomi mobile. RAM: The RAM available for overall use in Xiaomi mobiles is less. Though MIUI is great but it is too heavy and consumes most of the RAM. So, better go for high RAM Xiaomi models only - 3GB or above. Android Updates: The main Android software updates are not that frequent. MIUI is fequently updated, but it lacks the updated Android features. Overheating: Most of the devices overheat on heavy usage. Xiaomi seriously needs to work on it. Most of the smartphones are not good for long time gaming. Almost all devices have some heating issues, but in case of Xiaomi the generated heat doesn't seem to dissipate from the device. Repairs: Currently, Xiaomi is working all out to provide good service by increasing its service centers across India, the phones are durable too, but the repair cost is too high.
