HTC recently rolled out the Desire EYE in India and it boasts of a 13-megapixel front camera. But HTC has not made any announcements about the availability of the Desire EYE and that has prompted the Taiwanese smartphone maker to take to selfie camera smartphone market with a different approach. It has now rolled out the Desire 820s and unlike all selfie camera smartphones on market, it offers an 8-megapixel front camera. Nice.
Design: The HTC Desire 820s sports 78.74mmx157.7mmx7.74mm (lxbxh) as its dimensions and weighs 155gm. Not one of the lightest smartphones around, HTC has been able to keep its weight down by using plastics in its construction. While plastic does not seem to be a premium material, its usage on Desire 820s makes the device feel a lot more premium than what its price suggests, so kudos to HTC for that.
Display: The HTC Desire 820S sports a 5.5-inch screen that puts out display resolution of 1280x720 pixels. The pixels per inch count for the smartphone stands at 267. There is multi-touch support for the display on Desire 820s and while it does not stand out, it is a good quality unit.
Camera: The HTC Desire 820s sports a 13MP camera on the back and an 8MP on the front. The rear camera comes with a BSI sensor, LED flash and auto-focus feature. The front camera also sports a BSI sensor and is a fixed-focus wide-view snapper.
OS and special features: The HTC Desire 820s runs on Android 4.4.2 KitKat. The Android 5.0 Lollipop update should be available as an OTA update for Desire 820S. You get 16GB internal storage space and you can use a microSD card to expand it up to 32GB. There is 3G and 4G network capabilities present on the smartphone along with Wifi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, e-compass and GPS. A microUSB port and dual SIM features seal the deal.
Performance and battery life: The HTC Desire 820s sports a 1.7GHz octa-core processor of unknown make and has been paired with 2GB RAM. Not the most powerful smartphone, the Desire 820s still makes quick work of all tasks thrown at it. Powering the hardware is a 2600mAh battery that has been rated to last for 12 hours of usage and 560 hours of standby time on a single full charge.
HTC's effort to refresh the Desire series has resulted in the birth of Desire 820s. But it did not limit itself to just refreshing the range but also revamping it. HTC has bestowed on Desire 820s great specs and good looks too and it is meant to rival Samsung's Galaxy Note range. In terms of build quality, HTC betters Samsung by a wide margin. On top of that, it has an 8-megapixel front camera, while its competitors in this department have just a 5-megapixel snapper. So, it has bettered Sony's Xperia C3 as well. The only complaint we have is that there are few differences which might even go unnoticed between the build of smartphones in Desire and One ranges. Till now it has been a factor working in HTC's favour but we wish HTC could come up something new than just specs to differentiate the two ranges.
