The first flagship device to be launched this year was G6 from the South Korean handset maker, LG. Moroever, this is the first smartphone to have started the trend of slimmer bezels on the front and looks every bit the premium handset that it is. The last flagship from the brand was a dud and G6 is a proof that LG learnt from its mistake. Here is a brief overview of the device for those interested in this handset.
IP68 rating: This time around, LG has taken extra measures and designed the flagship with IP68 rating, which makes it pretty durable. The G6 is water-resistant upto 3 feet of water for 30 minutes, which means even if you drop it in a pool or spill your drink on the handset, it will survive. The rating also means that the handset is resistant to dust and would not be affected by dust accumulating.
Slimmer Bezels: This is the major design overhaul by the brand since LG G2, which saw the introduction of rear mounted buttons. LG has gone with slimmer bezels on the front in G6 with 90% of front panel being covered by the display. As a result, the handset looks very pleasing to the eye with rounded corners on the display and more body to display ratio.
Pre-loaded Google Assistant: This is the first ever non-Google smartphone to come with the much loved Google Assistant baked in the operating system. For the uninitiated, Google Assistant is an AI personal assistant that can read your onscreen content to provide solutions and also works with voice commands et al.
18:9 quad-HD display: This was the first ever smartphone to come with the extra wide aspect ratio for the display. Notably, the smartphones prior to this, all came with the standard aspect ratio of 16:9. This means that the display is slightly taller than all smartphones and has an unusual resolution of 1440 x 2880 Pixels across 5.7-inches. This results in a sharp pixel density of 565 ppi and stunning viewing experience.
Dual camera: This is fast becoming a trademark on LG flagships and LG G6 too is not an exception. There is a dual 13 Megapixels snapper setup on the rear panel, which is unlike any other dual camera in the market. The second module is more of a wide angle lens, which can take in more scenery than the regular one. And the cameras can either swapped or used together.
Snapdragon 821: It does not make any sense for a 2017 flagship device to come with the tech that was highlight of last year. For some LG has equipped its latest flagship with the Snapdragon 821 processor, where its contemporaries are moving on the latest and more powerful Snapdragon 835 processor.
Battery not removable: Till now. LG was the only brand that offered flagship devices with removable battery. However, it changed with the launch of G6. While it is a good news considering water-resistance etc, LG's loyal base might reject it for the same.
