The Chinese handset maker, OnePlus has been making flagship killers for a while now and has been offering high end features in half the price through its handsets. However, this year the handset maker is transitioning from being the flagship killer to actual flagship with its OnePlus 5 handset. The handset has received a lot of flak for its iPhone 7 Plus like design but the fact remains that it is still one of the best smartphones around across the price range. Here is a brief overview of the device for those who are looking forward to buying the new handset.
Powerful dual cameras: The mainstay of the newly launched ‘flagship’ device from the brand is the rear dual camera module. This module boasts of 16MP + 20MP combination, where the latter is a telephoto lens with smaller aperture. These cameras work in tandem to click crisp images with high details. The camera comes into its own when you select the portrait mode, which uses both lenses to produce a Bokeh like effect found on the iPhone 7 Plus. It also comes equipped with Phase Detection Auto Focus, which helps the device to lock in on the subject pretty fast.
Premium design: This year, OnePlus has gone all put with the design of the handset and OnePlus 5 is unlike any we have seen in the past. At just 7.2mm, this is the slimmest OnePlus offering in the history and comes with an all metal unibody design. While the camera placement makes it look like iPhone 7 Plus, it feels more premium in hand than the Apple device, all thanks to the tapered edges.
Reading Mode: One of the key highlight of the device as pointed out by the brand is the Reading mode, which gives a warm hue to the display and filters the harmful blue light. While it is nothing new, what OnePlus has done is to connect the reading mode with ambient light sensor, which means that the hue changes depending on the surrounding ambience. Now that is a first for a smartphone.
Dull display: One of the specs that the brand has retained from the last generation OnePus 3T is the size and resolution of the display. At a time when handsets at this price are coming with bigger displays with better resolution, OnePlus 5 features a 5.5-inch full HD display. While the brand claims that it makes no difference to the naked eye whether it is QHD or full HD and it is also easier on battery. It may not sit well with many users.

So here’s the thing – the OnePlus 5 is a great phone. It’s got beastly performance, good cameras and long battery life, and gives you everything you’d expect from a flagship. Unfortunately, OnePlus seems to have forgotten its own mantra of never settling. When the company started out, its goal was creating innovative smartphones at affordable prices. The OnePlus 5 is in fact the opposite - it borrows heavily from other successful smartphones, and while the price ...
