Selfie smartphones are the talk of the town now and manufacturers have been launching a device after device to cater to selfie enthusiasts with smartphones featuring better front camera. Samsung is not the one to be left behind and has launched the Galaxy Grand Prime. This device is equipped with a 5 Megapixel wide angle camera on its front that is intended to take better selfies. Samsung placed the smartphone in mid-range segment like all other selfie smartphones in the country.
Design: The Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime sports 72.1mmx144.8mmx8.6mm (lxbxh) as its dimensions and weighs 156gm. The Galaxy Grand Prime feels just like any other Samsung smartphone, sturdy but plasticky. The fact that you can remove the battery is a boon to heavy users.
Display: The Galaxy Grand Prime sports a 5-inch screen that puts out display resolution of 960x540 pixels. The pixels per inch ratings stands at 220 and it supports multi-touch. Other than that, we wish Samsung could have given us the AMOLED display instead of its standard-fare TFT IPS display.
Camera: The Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime sports an 8-megapixel camera on the back and a -5 megapixel one on the front. The rear camera has an LED flash and auto-focus funtions. The front camera is a standard fixed-focus unit.
OS and special features: The Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime runs on Android 4.4.2 KitKat with the TouchWiz UI skin from the smartphone maker. You get 8GB internal storage space and you can use a microSD card to expand it up to 64GB. There is 3G network capabilities present on the smartphone along with Wifi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and GLONASS. A microUSB port with OTG functionality and dual SIM features seal the deal.
Performance and battery life: The Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime sports a 1.2GHz quad-core processor of unknown make and has been paired with 1GB RAM. An adequately powerful combination, it should be able to help you deal with daily tasks but do not expect it to be a powerhouse by any measure. Powering the hardware is a 2600mAh battery which has been rated to last for 17 hours of usage on a single full charge.
Frankly, the handset is deemed fit only to take selfies and disappoints when it comes to specifications. There are smartphones with better specifications available for a price tag much lower than the Galaxy Grand Prime. Moreover, these entry level smartphones are much more performance-oriented and have Quad-core processor. It is for the customers to decide whether they want a selfie oriented smartphone with good front camera and lesser specifications or a powerful smartphone at half the cost with decent front camera.
