The battle of music streaming apps is getting more and more interesting in India. Killer Features has learnt that Spotify has opened an office in India. The office was opened in Mumbai last year as per the documents submitted to the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. However, there is no information on when it would launch it services in the country.
Spotify is probably one of the most popular streaming services in the world. In January it announced that it has 70 million subscribers. Apple music, on the other hand, had 30 million paid users. It was in India with its global launch in 2015.
Spotify has a freemium model which allows users to stream music for free with limitations on the features while the premium service allows full access. Indian streaming services such as Saavn, Hungama and Gaana have adopted such model as well.
It will be interesting to see what pricing when Spotify adapts to when it launches in India. Traditionally all the content streaming companies have kept their subscription rates very low as compared to their pricing in the other countries.Spotify is priced at $9.99 per month in the US. While Apple music is priced at $9.99 per month (Rs 650 Approx) in the US it is priced at Rs 120 per month in India.
Another international player Amazon Prime Music is expected to make a full rollout soon in the country. However, the service is available in a limited capacity to the Indian Echo users. Killer Features has reached out to Spotify for a comment.
